In most homes, your stairs are one of the first things your guests see as they enter your home. For any proud homeowner/landlord, it is important to ensure that the stairs are presentable and in good condition. This is not only for aesthetic appeal but also for safety. Here are a few key tips to help you maintain your stair carpet/stair runner.

Are your stairs giving off the right impression about your home?

Vacuuming
Vacuuming is one of the most important aspects of carpet care, and your stairs must not be overlooked. Dirt and tiny bits of grit and gravel become trapped in all carpets and as the carpet is walked on these dirt particles rub against the fibres and can cause premature wear and tear. Ensure that you vacuum daily in order to avoid this damage to your stair carpet/stair runner, and when vacuuming stairs, always remember to start at the top and work your way down.

Brush attachments for vacuum cleaners are a great way of thoroughly cleaning all areas of your stairs.

Use the brush attachment
Standard vacuum cleaners are not really designed for stairs, as they can be heavy or too big to use properly. Invest in a lightweight, handheld model that’s about the size of a small suitcase that comes with different attachments. Using a brush attachment gets the best results, as it loosens impacted dirt and can help your carpet last longer.

Hand Scrubbing
Another option is to shampoo the carpet by hand, which is also the best method of spot-cleaning. For this, you will need to buy specially formulated carpet shampoo. Mix this with water until you get a light foamy consistency, and then work this into your carpet with a scrub brush. If you have a wet/dry vacuum, vacuum as much water as you can out of the carpet, and if not then use a soft, absorbent towel or cloth to blot the carpet and remove as much water as you can. Once the staircase is completely dry, go over it again with a vacuum for the best possible results.

Simply avoiding wearing outdoor shoes when walking on your stairs can make a big difference in protecting your stair runner/stair carpet.

Footwear
In order to prevent the wear and tear of your stair carpet/stair runner, it is important to be careful about what footwear you wear. Rubber soled shoes that are designed to grip will pull and tear at the pile of the carpet in your home, especially on your stairs. Avoiding outdoor shoes entirely will definitely help protect your stair carpet/stair runner as you are reducing the pull and tear, while at the same time preventing any dirt and grit from outside getting into the carpet fibres.
