The Terrazzo Floor Trend

One of the biggest interior design trends for 2018 is Terrazzo.

But what is Terrazzo?

Terrazzo is a composite material created by mixing together marble, granite, quartz, glass chips etc. into a cement binder or epoxy resin. It can be used for floors as well as wall treatments.

Terrazzo has been around for 1500 years and was first invented by Italian marble workers who were looking for different ways to use marble chips.

This year experts predict that Terrazzo Floors will be all the rage in kitchens and bathrooms.

Key Features of Terrazzo Floors:

  • It is durable and water-resistant.
  • Can be used indoors as well as outdoors and also works well in commercial setups as well as areas that see a lot of foot traffic.
  • Terrazzo was created to reuse & recycle small pieces of marble hence it is a somewhat eco-friendly option.
  • Cost wise it can be a great alternative to ceramic and/or stone.
  • It’s easy to clean and maintain with sweeping and mopping regularly.
  • In terms of designs, look and feel you can go all out. Depending on the colour schemes and design you are after, these floors can be highly bespoke. You can choose your background colours, you could go light or dark, you can also choose the materials in it, the shapes, sizes, cut and colours and textures. The finish could be shiny and glossy or you could leave it textured or matte.
  • Once it’s set it’s almost impossible to remove.
  • Non-textured or smooth terrazzo floor can be slippery when wet.
